I need a new adding machine

Work on ImagePRV is going well, I had a quick tutorial from Wenda yesterday on how to use his filtering code.  The guy’s a genius, the code works like a dream.  I’ve got it convolving the images with 50 different filter kernels in under 10 minutes (at a resolution of 512×512px).  Unfortunately in the “real world” mammograms are 4000×2000 pixels.  Applying 50 different filters on an image this size would take days (and a HUGE amount of system resources).  So it looks like I’m going to be needing a new machine.  Don’t get me wrong my current laptop is great, I love it to bits.  It runs MATLAB (and ImagePRV at the moment) so smoothly, but I don’t think it could handle the might of a full resolution mammogram.

At the moment I’m thinking of building my own machine with some processor or other (I don’t really know, or care, which one) and about 16Gb or RAM.  Oh and a 24″ Dell widescreen monitor.  It’d mean I could hook the Wii up to for some bedroom antics.  At the moment it’s sat in a box in my airing cupboard, not a good place for a console of it’s distinction.
